Insurance is mandatory for all drivers in Nova Scotia and every vehicle driven on public roads or highways in Nova Scotia must also be insured. Required coverage includes third party liability, accident benefits, and accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified motorists.

Sarah Mullins is an insurance broker with Caldwell Roach Insurance. "We work with our wide range of insurance providers to find the most competitive rates. We do the shopping so they don't have to," Sarah explains. "This job requires a strong attention to detail, making sure we get the coverage right."

Sarah, who has been with Caldwell Roach almost five years, has been exposed to a lot of customer scenarios through her work. She is also working on her CAIB (Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker Program) certification which will give her even deeper understanding of personal and commercial insurance. "It helps me to provide even better customer service to our clients," says Sarah. "Our clients are important."

Clients have many questions about their insurance coverage. "But recently, I have heard similar questions about auto insurance in calls with our clients," said Sarah.

Here are some commonly asked questions about vehicle insurance:

What is third party liability coverage?
Third party liability coverage, also called PLPD, insures you if you injure someone, cause someone's death, or damage someone else's property in a motor vehicle accident. You must have at least $500,000 of third party liability coverage, many have $1,000,000 of coverage.

What are accident benefits?
Accident benefits, provide coverage for injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident. Benefits include medical and rehabilitation expenses, death and funeral benefits, and loss of income.

What is uninsured and unidentified driver insurance coverage?
If an unidentified driver, or a driver without insurance, injures you or damages your vehicle you may make a claim under the uninsured and unidentified driver section of your own automobile insurance policy.

What is the difference between collision and comprehensive coverage?
If your vehicle is damaged because of a collision or due to another coverage risk, you will want coverage to help pay for the repair or replacement costs. Collision coverage pays for the costs of repairing your vehicle if there is an impact, a hit-and-run or if it goes off the road. Comprehensive coverage pays for the damage as a result of an unexpected situation such as a fire, theft, animal or damage to your windshield.

Who should be listed on my policy?
It is very important that all licensed drivers are accounted for. All licensed drivers, if they live in the household or frequently drive a covered vehicle, should be listed on the policy.

These are just some of the questions Sarah is asked at Caldwell Roach Insurance. "We want you to ask questions, that way we can help you make an informed decision about insurance," states Sarah.
